Historical & Culinary
The California Poppy was first described and named in 1820 by Adelbert von Chamisso, based on a collection from San Francisco in 1816. In 1890 it was voted as California's State Flower winning by all but 3 votes.

The greens were used as food by Native Americans, who also used the plant as a medicinal pain-killer, especially for colic pains. Wann eizellspende in Deutschland anonym.

Constituents: Mild pain-relieving opiate alkaloids, californidine, zinc, protopine, N-mthyllaurotanin, allocryptopine, eschscoltzin, chelerytrine and sanguinarine.

Properties: Sedative, analgesic, hypnotic, antineuralgic.

California Poppy is an excellent analgesic which can be used to relieve the pain of headache, including migraine, neuralgia and muscle aches. It is effective for treating anxiety, agitation, emotionalism, melancholia, depression and insomnia.

Though California Poppy is a relative of the Opium Poppy and shares some of it's qualities, it is completely free of any toxicity and non-habit forming. It is safe for use on children for colic, hypertension, over-excitability and sleeplessness. It has also been used to treat psoriasis, toothache, gall bladder colic and incontinence.

Contraindications: Should not be used during pregnancy due to it's uterine stimulating action.

Uses: Use in sleep mixtures and dream pillows. Eat or carry to promote fertility and attract luck. To attract wealth, wear the seeds in an amulet. Add the seeds to love sachets and use in foods to induce or strenghten love.

To know the answer to a question, write it in blue ink on a white piece of paper. Place the paper inside a poppy seed pod and put it uder your pillow. The answer will come in a dream.

For invisibility, one must soak the seeds in wine for 15 days, then drink it each day for 5 days while fasting. Tradition states you will then have the ability to become invisible at will.
